Project Summary

This BIRAenergy (former part of ConSol) project focused on lowering solar system installation and operating and maintenance (O&M) costs. The project demonstrated a low cost "plug and play" roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) system for the asphalt-shingle re-roofing market. Standard roofers are able to install a PV system along with an asphalt roof with no special tools or roofing penetrations. Demonstrations were conducted on six homes in the SDG&E territory with SDG&E contributing to the cost of the energy efficiency upgrades.

GE and BIRAenergy partnered with local roofing contractors for the installation of a new roof and solar system on six demonstration homes. After the installations, the contractors provide feedback on installation issues, materials and labor costs. Target audiences for the project include homeowners/ratepayers, energy efficiency retrofit providers, utilities and the financial community.
